Introduction: The World of the Paranormal Romance
Did you know that some of the most popular books currently fall under the genre of paranormal romance? It’s for people who enjoy reading about vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and all sorts of other humanoids with supernatural abilities.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with paranormal romance novels, they are books that tell stories about love between humans and non-humans. These stories often take place in a fictional universe where humans know of their existence and sometimes live among them.
It is also worth mentioning that I love books involving gender-bending. And when this happens in these genres, it creates such an interesting dynamic between the main characters. I’ll write another post detailing this later.
Love Triangle in Paranormal Romance Novels
A love triangle is a common trope in fiction and films. It’s a dramatic trope that can be used to create suspense and drama in the story.
A love triangle is an emotionally intense and intricate plot device that is used to develop character and advance the plot by involving three people who are attracted to each other.
What Exactly is the Paranormal?
The paranormal is a term used to describe a lifeform, entity, or phenomenon not known to exist by natural or scientific laws.
The concept of the paranormal has been around for centuries and is a common theme in many horror films.
Paranormal Heroes vs. Villains
One of the oldest debates in the universe is whether heroes or villains are more important.
The answer to this question differs depending on what kind of world we’re living in. A world which is fighting against some supernatural evil force, heroes and their actions usually matter a lot more than villains and their actions. On the other hand, in a world that’s fairly safe from any supernatural dangers, then this debate becomes irrelevant because both heroes and villains are equally important to maintain order in society.
The paranormal heroes and villains are a fascinating contrast. Some examples of the paranormal heroes include the vampire protagonists in Twilight, Stephenie Meyer’s book series about vampires living in a small town, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Joss Whedon’s TV Series.
The vampire hero is a trope that has been around for centuries. Think of Bram Stoker’s Dracula from 1892, for example. These stories often focus on the protagonist’s immortality and their immortality comes at a cost.
When Heroes and Villains fall in love
Think Buffy and Spike. Even Bella and Edward, to some extent. Fayre and Tamlin from a Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas (at least in the first book).
There’s this certain feeling you get when characters are on two different sides of a battle, yet they fall in love. It feels warm and my chest squeezes and my heart flutters in hope and trepidation. I can go on, but I’ll end this here.
What are your favourite paranormal romance books?
